Here at Chochmat, we have different shabbat services on different weeks to suit a variety of needs and preferences. Dress is casual or festive; Wear what makes you feel good. Some of our members choose to wear white in celebration of the Sabbath bride. Our prayerbooks are translated and transliterated—you do not need to know or read Hebrew to worship with us. Just bring yourself, your open heart, and let the Divine shine in!

We offer the following types of services, usually, on alternating weeks, though some are once a month:

Celebratory Kabbalat Shabbat
FIRST and THIRD Friday of each month) at
7:30 pm
Join us Friday evenings for the celebratory welcoming of the Sabbath bride. The services are led by Rabbi SaraLeya Schley, Assistant Brian Schachter-Brooks, and Cantor Cyrise Beatty and accompanied by the Chochmat HaLev musicians. Join our rich community to open your heart and connect to the Divine through prayer, song and dance. (Please join us for a dairy/vegetarian/kosher fish potluck before the service at 6:30 pm).

Davening with Rabbi SaraLeya—Learners and Participatory Minyan
Saturday following the FIRST Friday of each month
10:30 am

Rabbi SaraLeya leads a renewal style service with chanting, core elements of the traditional prayers and and interactive Torah service during which we will draw out the lessons and draw down the blessing of our Torah portion. There will be explanations of the prayers and the organization of the service appropriate to those who are present. Please contact saraleya@chochmat.org if you would like particpate or if you are ready to begin leyning from the Torah scroll!

Shabbat Morning Blessing

Saturday following the THIRD Friday of each month
10:30 am

Continue the festive traditions of Kabbalat Shabbat into the morning. This service is led by Rabbi SaraLeya Schley, Brian Schachter-Brooks and Cyrise Beatty and the Chochmat musicians.  In this fresh and vibrant musical service, we will chant, daven and meditate to the effervescent sounds of harmonium and hand drums, hear an accessible Torah reading and create a sacred space for inner alchemy! Please bring a vegetarian/dairy/kosher fish dish to share for a post-service kiddush luncheon. We'll supply the challah and the wine!

Boundary Crosser Minyan
SECOND Friday of each month
6:30 pm

Join Lisa and Brian Schachter-Brooks in this smaller, more intimate alternative to the larger Kabbalat Shabbat service. It features chanting and singing of the traditional liturgy, as well as insightful teachings on the awakening of consciousness through Torah.

Family Havurah with Rabbi SaraLeya
FOURTH Friday Beginning in SEPTEMBER
Let's gather at 6:30PM for a family-appropriate service (primarily pre-Bar Mitzvah age, but all ages, from tots to elders, are welcome).  Other prayers, teaching and stories will be integrated into a potluck meal.  Rabbi SaraLeya will need help with set up, so please contact her at saraleya@chochmat.org.  This evening is envisioned as a way to form a havurah of families with children within our larger Chochmat HaLev community.

Contemplative/Chanting Service

Saturdays following the SECOND and FOURTH Fridays of each month
10:30 am
Join us Saturday mornings for this meditative service led by community members. It is designed for adults and combines both chanting and silence in an alternating sequence to resonate with your soul and connect with the Divine. (Occasionally, these dates change. Please check the calendar to confirm.)

Tot Shabbat
FIRST and THIRD Friday of each month
6:00-6:30 pm

Come and sing, dance and bless with Jen Miriam Kantor! The service includes candle-lighting, sing-alongs with guitar and instruments, puppets and dancing. The service ends with Kiddush and Hamotzi. (Please join us for a dairy/vegetarian/kosher fish potluck after the service at 6:30 pm).

Saturday Evening Third Meal and Havdallah Service
two hours before sundown on the Saturdays of the FIRST AND THIRD Shabbats
Gather with Rabbi SaraLeya toward the end of Shabbat, a time of quiet contemplation and learning. There will be a meditative afternnon prayer service. We will share a light Third Meal (potluck vegetarian finger food please) while studying texts that will guide us on our soul journey of self-reflection and self-development. When 3 stars are visible, we will make Havdallah with wine, spices and candlelight. Note that times vary with the season, and families or other busy folk are welcome to come just for havdallah.

Chochmat HaLev Shabbaton!
Every Third Shabbat of the month, join us for a full Shabbat experience! Rabbi SaraLeya Schley, Assistant Brian Schachter-Brooks and Cantor Cyrise Beaty will guide us through davening, meditating, learning, dining and community goodness, with gatherings on Friday night, Saturday morning and Saturday evening (see above). This is a new opportunity at Chochmat to totally renew yourself in the power of Shabbat with community, music and relaxation!
